This garden is
a typical city garden measuring just 5 m by 20 m. Clever design has enabled
us to install many features making it truly multi-functional. Raised vegetable
beds at a handy work-top height surround a central paved circle housing an underground
sand pit which can be covered and walked over when not in use. The outside office
provides a work area separate from the house and helps conceal a practical composting
area from view. A child's swing can be attached to the pergola which provides
support for climbing plants. Seating areas are situated on each decked area
and there is still room for plenty of decorative plants in the borders. We have
made use of the vertical space and added espaliered fruit trees and climbing
varieties of vegetables such as beans, peas, squash and courgettes. Other vegetables
grown include broad beans, autumn raspberries, apples, greengages, strawberries,
spinach, radishes, thornless blackberries and culinary herbs.
